We don’t usually think of Texas as being “southern,” although it is in the southern part of the US, as opposed to being in the “northern” part of our country. Texas is not really a good example, since (a) people there seem to think of themselves as being “western” in way of life and (b) they did try to establish themselves as a separate country at one point.
The South, on the other hand, did succeed in making of themselves a separate country and chose to leave the relative security of being part of the nation. It took a war to force them to rejoin the rest of these United States.
