Osaka (, Ōsaka) is Japans second largest metropolitan area after Tokyo[1]. It has been the economic powerhouse of the Kansai Region[2] for many centuries. Osaka was formerly known as Naniwa. Before the Nara Period[3], when the capital used to be moved with the reign of each new emperor[4], Naniwa was once Japans capital city, the first one ever known.
In the 16th century, Toyotomi Hideyoshi[5] chose Osaka as the location for his castle[6], and the city may have become Japans political capital if Tokugawa Ieyasu[7] had not terminated the Toyotomi lineage after Hideyoshis death and established his government in distant Edo (Tokyo)[8].
