The confusion can arise because established can be used an as adjective.If there is a date given, then it is clearly the verb, which is a single event
the school was built (not the same meaning, I am just using it as an example)....was founded....was establishedin a particular year.
But, as an adjective established is a state of being stable, trusted, rooted - the opposite of new or untested. If something has been around for a while, it becomes established.
sothe school was established in 1907butit is an established school with a long history of Adventist education.
Their annual gala has become an established event since it first took place in 1908.
You can see where the confusion arises.
And of course in plaques, badges and signs, you often miss out the in, and just write it like a headline - and often shorten established to est..
