Each block or item has an ID value assigned to it in Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.12. In some cases, the same ID value has been assigned to similar items. When this happens, the DataValue identifies the variation of the block (DataValue is sometimes referred to as damage value or data value in commands).
Here is an interactive list of Minecraft IDs for all items, blocks, tools, dyes, foods, armor, weapons, mechanisms, transportation, decorations, and potions for Minecraft Java Edition (PC/Mac) 1.12.
The ID value of an item comes in handy when you want to summon a mob equipped with an item such as a saddle, armor, weapon, etc.
Starting in Minecraft 1.8, you will need to know the name of an item when using the /give command[1].
For example, you use the gold_block name in the /give command when you want to give the player called DigMinecraft 4 blocks of gold.
