EventTropical Storm Lionrock (formerly 22W) is tracking northwest in the South China Sea Oct. 8. As of 17:00 CST, the storms center of circulation was approximately 574 km (357 miles) east-southeast of Hanoi, Vietnam. Forecast models indicate the system will strengthen slightly as it tracks north-northwest and makes landfall over eastern Hainan Province, China, late Oct. 8. Following landfall, the system will likely weaken as it turns to tracks northwest over Hainan Province before exiting into the Gulf of Tonkin the afternoon of Oct. 9. The storm is forecast to strengthen slightly as it turns gradually to track southwest in the Gulf of Tonkin before making landfall over Thanh Hoa Province, Vietnam, early Oct. 11, and dissipating over Vientiane Province, Laos, the afternoon of Oct. 12. The storms track and intensity forecast remain somewhat uncertain, and the system may change accordingly over the coming days.
