International tourist arrivals grew 6% in 2018, totalling 1.4 billion according to the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
In 2010, UNWTO published its long-term forecast predicting this milestone of 1.4 billion would be reached in 2020. However, the rapid growth of international arrivals in recent years, thanks to stronger economic growth, more affordable air travel, technological changes, new businesses models and greater visa facilitation globally, has brought it two years ahead.
International tourist arrivals up 6% in 2018According to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, worldwide international tourist arrivals (overnight visitors) are estimated to have increased by 6% to 1.4 billion in 2018, above the 3.7% growth of the global economy.
The Middle East (+10%), Africa (+7%), Asia and the Pacific and Europe (both at +6%) led growth in 2018. Arrivals to the Americas were below the world average (+3%).
